Take a dip under the earth at the Gutenberger Caves in the Swabian Alb. With the most density of caves in Germany, two caves lay at the end of the Tiefental region in Gutenberg: the Gutenberger Höhle and the Gußmannshöhle. An hour drive southeast of Stuttgart, these caves are a family fun adventure to get out of the house.

The caves are open May through October: Saturday 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday and public holidays 10 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Keep in mind:

Wear good, closed toe shoes. The inside of the caves are slippery and waterfalls from the dripstones. Don’t forget to bring a light jacket with you. Even in the summer months, bring along a windbreaker or rain jacket as the temperature is dramatically cooler inside the caves. Make use of the rails on the steep staircases and watch your head if you are on the taller side!
