The Portuguese say, “The only easy thing about money is losing it.” However, taking a trip to Lisbon doesn’t mean having to lose your money. With this budget-friendly itinerary, your Lisbon trip will be made easy.
1. Get moving with a free walking tour provided by Sandeman. These daily tours start at 10 a.m. and the meeting point is by the Camões Monument.
2. Browse through Feira de Ladra, the oldest market in Lisbon which houses an eclectic mix of home goods, clothing, media and antiques.
3. Stroll around the Jardim do Principe Real, a lush public garden which boasts a cypress tree in its center. Events are also taken place in this garden. Admission is free.
4. Immerse yourself in culture at Martim Moniz. This square, full of diversity, is decked with kiosks serving food and drinks. During the weekends, it becomes packed with a fusion marketplace, DJ’s, concerts, debates and workshops.
5. Grab a book, sunscreen and your hat as you enjoy the sun at the Ribeira das Naus. This river-walk is buzzing with people and cyclists.
6. Sink your teeth into the heavenly pastry known as Pastel de Nata. This creamy egg custard tart is a dessert not to be missed! The best ones can be found at Manteigaria for only one euro.
7. Take in the view at Santa Luzia Viewpoint which is bejeweled with azulejos, ornately decorated Portuguese tiles. From here, you can see the view over the Tagus river.
8. Visit Igreja de São Vicente de Fora, one of Lisbon’s most important monasteries. This church also contains the royal pantheon. Admission to enter is free.
9. Wonder at the Torre de Belem, a fortified tower located in the parish of Santa Maria de Belem.
10. Ride Tram 28, a tram that brings you up and down Lisbon’s hills to the historic parts of the city. A single ticket is 2.90 euros. Tip: Purchase the 24-hour public transport ticket for 6.15 euros which includes the metro and tram services.
11. Visit the Alfama District, Portugal’s oldest district that includes many important historical attractions.
12. Marvel St. George’s castle, a Moorish castle atop a hill that overlooks Lisbon and the Tagus River. Admission to this castle is 8.50 euros for adults and 5 euros for students. Children less than 10 years-old are free.
13. Enjoy delicious food while listening to fado, Portuguese music accompanied by mandolins or guitars, at A Tasca do Chico. This bar and restaurant is known for their affordable menu.
14. People watch at Rossio Square which is one of Lisbon’s main squares since the middle ages. While here, take a picture with the Colum of Pedro IV.
15. Leisurely sip on drinks at Cinco Lounge. This cocktail bar is known for its trendy atmosphere and notable drink menu. Note that cocktails are between 7 to 8 euros, so be sure to watch how many drinks your order.
16. Stroll hand in hand with your loved one through the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome which is near the Tagus river. Admission is 10 euros.
