With some of the oldest and most iconic colleges and universities in the world, it’s no wonder Europe has some beautiful places to receive an education. Whether you’re looking to apply and enroll, or just visit and stroll the campus grounds, here are some of Europe’s most beautiful colleges!

University of Salamanca, Spain

The oldest university in Spain, and the third oldest university in the world (still in operation), the University of Salamanca was founded in 1134! The University of Salamanca is located west of Madrid, on a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you’re sure to be surrounded by culture, history and beauty galore. If you venture to this campus, be sure to check out the University’s famous gothic old library and school courtyard.

University of Bologna, Italy

The University of Bologna truly is the oldest university in the world! Founded in 1088, this university is still one of the most prestigious and respected universities in Italy today. If you choose one university to visit in Europe, Bologna might just have to be it! Be sure to check out the famous Palazzo Poggi, which houses one of the University’s museums! There’s also a botanical garden, that can’t be missed.

University of Coimbra, Portugal

Established in 1290, the University of Coimbra overlooks the beautiful city of Portugal. What makes Coimbra unique is that the center of the university, “University City”, is actually the old royal palace! Famous for baroque architecture, be sure to check out some of the university’s most famous sites: the Cathedral of Santa Cruz, the Joanine Library, and the Sao Miguel Chapel.

Sorbonne University, France

Located in the heart of Paris, this university might just be one of the most photographed educational institutions in the world. The detail of the campus’ architecture is astounding. Tour guides recommend you allow yourself a few hours if exploring the inside of the university walls to properly take it all in. If you find yourself at the Sorbonne check-off seeing La Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève and the Saint-Jaques room from your list!

Trinity College, Ireland

Last but certainly not least, Trinity College welcomes all visitors to step inside their walls to explore. Established in 1592, Trinity College is one of Britain and Ireland’s seven ancient universities. Sit in the historic courtyard and spend some time people-watching on a sunny day, or if Irish weather prevails, you’ll find hours of entertainment inside the “Long Room”, Irelands largest library (picture floor to ceiling books)!

Get your study on or simply let yourself wander, either way, you’re sure to be enchanted by education at these universities and colleges!
