In a country known for its stellar and deliciously potent brews, it’s no wonder one of the world’s arguably best comes from Belgium. Although the rarer Westvleteren often takes the top spot, Delirium has become a symbol for Belgian ingenuity in the brewing process. Beer aficionados can sample the tasty beverages throughout Europe; however, to get the full experience, check out Delirium Village in central Brussels.
With humble beginnings in a small village outside of Ghent, Brouwerij Huyghe began production in 1906 — although some type of brewing has been happening there since the mid-17th century. In 1988, brew masters experimented by combining three different strains of yeast, which resulted in a potent and tasty blonde ale — Delirium Tremens. Today, there are seven different beers beneath the Delirium name: Tremens, Red, Argentum, Nocturnum, Christmas, Deliria and Black. Bottled in ceramic bottles with an instantly recognizable pink elephant logo, Delirium has become a world-class and award-winning brew.
The Delirium Village
While it’s fun to go visit the original source in Melle, Delirium fans can easily head to the heart of Brussels for a fantastic experience. With eight different bars, there is no shortage of tasty beverages to be had. Situated a few blocks north of the Grand Place, the Delirium Village is a mecca for beer lovers. The Delirium Café boasts a whopping 2,000 brews to sample from around the globe. With delicious eats and a vibrant atmosphere, it’s easy to while the hours away. Fancy a quieter locale? Stop by the Taphouse. Twenty-nine casks ales on tap offer unique craft brews, including the seven different Delirium beers. During the Christmas season, the taps are taken over by seasonal specialties.
For those preferring the hoppy IPA styles, head to Delirium Hoppy Loft. Rotating between 20 taps are bolder and more bitter offerings from Belgium, the U.S., Netherlands, U.K. and more. Similarly, the Monasterium highlights more than 150 beers produced in abbeys and Trappists. For those looking for a bit more of a punch, there are also more than 300 types of vodka available for sampling. Or head over to the Floris Tequila Bar, which has more than 450 types of tequila and absinthe.
