Initially met with controversial fanfare, on April 12, 1992, Euro Disney opened its gates to the public. Billed as the European Disneyland, expectations were high. However, due to the French media warning motorists to stay off the roads near the park because of anticipated traffic congestion, opening day brought in less than half of the projected visitors. Attendance was much lower than expected during the following months. Rumors of economic turmoil and the threat of bankruptcy loomed.
Two years later, Euro Disney was rebranded as Disneyland Paris. The following year, a newer and much-hyped version of Space Mountain opened to much fanfare. With attendance steadily rising, Disneyland Paris expanded and opened a second park — Walt Disney Studios — just in time for its 10th anniversary in 2002. Today Disneyland Paris is the most visited theme park in Europe, with more than 14 million visitors annually.
25 years of Disney magic
If you’ve visited the parks within the past few months, you’ve undoubtedly noticed many rides closed and fenced-off construction zones. For the first time since opening, the majority of rides at Disneyland Paris are undergoing a much-needed makeover. When the park opens for its months-long 25th anniversary celebration on March 26, 2017, guests will experience a whole new level of Disney magic. Complete with a dazzling light show, a new character parade and even more thrilling rides, it will be an experience you won’t want to miss.
Know before you go
Due to ongoing construction and ride refurbishments through April 2017, many attractions will be closed at some point. You can check the projected list of closures for your dates at http://holidays.disneylandparis.co.uk/eep.html. Admission prices vary, but keep in mind there is a significant military discount offered for active-duty servicemembers and their families. Discounted tickets can only be purchased at park ticket windows.
Be sure to make your hotel reservations early, as rooms may sell out quickly during the initial week of the anniversary celebration. For best prices, train tickets can be purchased up to 90 days in advance. Also, consider visiting mid-week when crowds may be lighter.
