Experiencing German Christmas markets are bucket list items of their own thanks to their magical atmospheres. However, figuring out what the must-visit markets are as well as the must-dos can be a stressful task. Keep it simple and follow this German Christmas market bucket list to ensure all of your holiday dreams come true.

  1. Pay a visit to Germany’s top markets — Nuremberg, Cologne, Dresden, Heidelberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

  2. Make time for the quaint markets of Bernkastel-Keus, Rüdesheim and Bamberg.

  3. Take the kiddos to experience the Weinachtsbackerei.

  4. Drink Glühwein while the kids sip on “Kinderpunsch” (hot fruit juice).

  5. Collect the Glühwein mugs from each market you experience.

  6. “Gluhbier” (mulled beer) is a rarity at markets, so grab some the moment you spot it.

  7. Try “Eierpunsch” — a spiked version of your favorite holiday drink, eggnog.

  8. Sink your teeth in "Dampfnudel” (a sweet bread roll served with warm vanilla or cherry sauce).

  9. Indulge in “Flammkuchen” (thin, baked dough topped with cream, onions and small pieces of meat) and “Kartoffelpuffer” (potato pancakes with apple sauce).

  10.  Snap a selfie in front of each city’s Weihnachtsmarkt sign to cherish the unforgettable memories later on.
