The Brasserie Nationale is a relatively new entity, having come into being in 1975, but the two breweries it fused together, Bofferding and Funck-Bricher, trace their histories much further back, to 1842 and 1764 respectively. In 2004, the Brasserie Nationale acquired the Brasserie Battin and transferred the production of this brand to Bascharage. The output of the National Brewery accounts for over 60 percent of the market share of beers produced in Luxembourg.

The National Brewery’s two-hour guided tour offers insight on Luxembourg’s terroir, history, and the skill of the brewers. Visitors can touch and smell the raw materials and taste the water with which the beer is brewed before heading to the brew-pub next door to enjoy a special beer tasting.

The cost of a tour for adults is 12 euros, and those under the age of 16 enter for free. Visit Monday through Saturday with a reservation, or on Saturdays at 3 p.m. without a reservation. The tour is generally given in French, but if enough English speakers are present, accommodation will generally be given to them. A great way to end the tour is with a meal at its partner restaurant “An der Brauerei” located just next door. The facility is located at 2, boulevard J.F. Kennedy, L-4930 Bascharage.

Bofferding offers a variety of beers in its line-up. In addition to its traditional Pils, there’s an amber house beer, a seasonal Christmas beer, and a beer called Hop, which credits the addition of Citra hops for its resulting tropical notes of mango and lychee.
