Living in the KMC? Here are a few favorite villages, towns and small cities that are worthy of the time and gas money it takes to reach them.

Homburg

Location: 18 miles / 25 minutes southwest of Ramstein

Love it for: its well-kept Old Town, topped by the ruins of a fortress and a castle, offers shopping and the Homburger Brauhaus, a brewery serving its very own beers. Unique sandstone caves also await exploration.

Ottweiler

Location: 28 miles / 40 minutes west of Ramstein

Love it for: picturesque alleyways and a pretty mix of lovingly restored half-timbered, Baroque and gabled homes.

Saarbrücken

Location: 40 miles / 45 minutes southwest of Ramstein

Love it for: Saarland’s capital city offers a pedestrian area with great shopping possibilities, a Baroque castle and church, and bustling nightlife.

Sankt Wendel

Location: 28 miles / 40 minutes west of Ramstein

Love it for: a picture-book worthy medieval Old Town overlooked by a towering Gothic basilica, cobblestone alleys, and plenty of shops and cafes.

Sarreguemines, France

Location: 45 miles / 50 minutes southwest of Ramstein

Love it for: cross over the French border to experience this compact city’s pretty riverside location at the confluence of the Blies and the Saar Rivers.

Bad Kreuznach

Location: 50 miles / one hour north of Kaiserslautern

Love it for: its spa town atmosphere with stately parks, saline inhalation walls, a pretty riverside location and its most famous landmark, timber houses built atop a stone bridge.

Deidesheim

Location: 30 miles / 55 minutes east of Kaiserslautern

Love it for: This charming wine village along the German Wine Route offers half-timbered houses, wine taverns and a unique town hall with twin outdoor stairways.

Kirchheimbolanden

Location: 28 miles / 35 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern

Love it for: castle ruins surrounded by a landscape garden, traces of walls that once surrounded the town, and a pair of interesting churches. It also has a brewery serving its own beer.

Rockenhausen

Location: 25 miles north / 40 minutes north of Kaiserslautern

Love it for: its well-preserved town center with charming squares, cobblestone streets, museums, cafes and an artsy flair.

Sankt Martin

Location: 30 miles / one hour southeast of Kaiserslautern

Love it for: among the German Wine Road’s countless adorable villages, this one charms with its plethora of half-timbered houses, wineries and hilly setting.
