Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea you will find Mykonos, a beautiful Greek island known for its paradise vibes and party atmosphere. Whether you are island hopping through Greece or on a cruise that is docking to Mykonos, consider this list if you have only 24 hours on this stunning island.
Morning
Admire the busy backstreets of Mykonos and enjoy breakfast at Cosmo Café which is reasonably priced and offers a healthy selection to choose from.
After a nice breakfast, discover the Church of Paraportiani, a picturesque white-washed church that showcases an authentic Greek island look with its white cave-like structures situated on cobblestone streets. Fact: This church consists of five separate churches that are joined together.
Love to shop till you drop? Roam your away around to Matoyianni Street, a shopaholic’s haven. This street is bursting with designer and handmade jewelry stores as well as souvenir shops.
While you’re browsing through the shops wondering what souvenir to bring back, head to The Olive Oil Shop as Greece is known for its olive oil.
Since you’re in the old town of Mykonos, walk along little Venice, a narrow street decked with fishing houses lining the waterfront. The view of white stone houses with colorful doors and shutters will make for the perfect photo-op.
Tip: Rent a scooter for a fun and quick way to explore the island.
Afternoon
Mykonos wouldn’t be a Greek island if it were without its windmills so check out Kato Mili, iconic windmills that overlook Little Venice.
Ready for lunch? Feed your stomach at Pepper, a tiny restaurant which serves the best souvlaki, small pieces of meat with vegetables on a skewer. Gyros, cooked meat wrapped in a flatbread drizzled with tzatziki sauce, is also a favorite on the menu. This restaurant may be fast paced, but it’s perfect for your on-the-go routine! Tip: To sound authentic, pronounce gyros as “yee-ros”.
Beach hopping around the island is also recommended as each beach has its own vibe. Paranga beach provides two sandy beaches that was separated by a headland, which formed a large beach. The southern beach is calmer while the northern one is blaring with party music.
Tip: To make the most of your day, take public transportation such as the bus or taxi. The major bus stations are Fabrica, Remezzo and Agios Stefanos, which are located at the Old Port.
Evening
Tanning away and catching waves will put anyone in a hungry mood, so head to Avli Tou Thodori, a Greek restaurant, for delicious Mediterranean food in an upscale setting. Hearing the lapping of the waves as you eat fried calamari will be a memory to remember.
Tip: Mykonos boasts the best sunsets, so be sure to make dinner arrangements then!
Next, head back to the old town and treat your sun-kissed self out for a cocktail at Astra, the island’s well-raved bar.
