10 Things in the Netherlands ()

When you hear about the Netherlands, it's usually focused on thier most famous city. And, while Amsterdam certainly has some great things to offer a traveler (and we’ve included some ideas below), what else is there to do in the Netherlands? Well, there are quite a few treasures and places worth exploring! Also, due to the Netherland’s smaller size, you can fit many of these experiences into one trip, or simply add a day trip or two while visiting Amsterdam.

Here is a list of some of 10 unique things to do in the Netherlands:

1. See the tulips and gardens of Keukenhof, known as the “Garden of Europe.”

2. Get a taste of the great outdoors at the Hoge Veluwe National Park.

3. Visit one of the many zoos.

  • Natura Artis Magistra – the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, located in Amsterdam.

  • Ouwehands Dierenpark – located 45 minutes from Utrecht, this zoo is home of the Bear Forest, which is 20,000 square meters of natural forest for brown bears and wolves.

  • Safaripark Beekse Bergen – located outside Tilburg, where you can drive your own car through the park and see cheetahs and giraffes.

  • Dolfinarium Marine Mammal Park – located 45 minutes from Amsterdam.

  • Burgers Zoo – Near the city of Arnhem.

  • Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp)

4. Tour a museum in Amsterdam and experience the canals on your way there.

5. Try a new winter sport at one of the SnowWorld indoor snow and ski complexes. There are seven locations: Landgraaf, Amsterdam, Terneuzen, Zoetermeer, Rucphen, Amneville and Neuss

6. Experience the thrill and fun of a theme park with the whole family.

  • Efteling – the oldest theme park in the world, organized into four different fantasy realms

  • Attractiepark Slagharen – organized by geographic themed sites

  • Attractiepark Duinrell – amusement park, water park and indoor playground, great for both kids and adults

7. Experience Dutch cheese at the Alkmaar Cheese Market or through a visit to the towns of Gouda and Edam.

8. See picturesque and historic windmills in Kinderdijk and experience an 18th-century Dutch village in Zaanse Schans.

9. Experience one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by visiting Delta Works: Zeeland’s Spectacular Dikes, less than an hour from Antwerp, Belgium.

10. Visit one of these charming unique towns to experience Dutch culture.

  • Madurodam – a miniature version of the Netherlands, located in The Hague

  • Marken – historic village located on the Markermeer Lake outside of Amsterdam, filled with wooden green cottages and clog making

  • Volendam – fishing village located on Lake Ijsselmeer outside of Amsterdam
