Las teresitas beach, Canary Islands ()

An archipelago located about 72 miles off the coast of Morocco, the Canary Islands is a destination many sunseekers excitedly hurry to. With plenty of all-inclusive resorts, pristine beaches and kid-friendly activities for all to enjoy, these islands will be your new favorite vacation spot. Below are a few useful things to know before deciding which sunny island to spend time in.

  1. There are eight major islands, but Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and La Palma are the most popular destinations. Note that La Palma has suffered from volcanic eruptions recently, so check with the tourism board to see if it’s safe to explore again.

  2. Although the archipelago is so close to Morocco, it still belongs to Spain. Obviously, Spanish is the spoken language.

  3. Everyone knows potatoes, but you should still try the Canarian potatoes or “papas arrugadas.” These potatoes are boiled and topped with mojo rojo, a sauce containing chili peppers and garlic.

  4. Need a winter getaway? Any destination you choose in the Canary Islands guarantees you sun (even in the winter) and a comfortable climate to chase away the winter blues.

  5. Mas Palomas in Gran Canaria boasts a mile-long white sand dune that’s great for sand surfing. Gran Canaria also has the most diverse landscape.

  6. If you’re exploring Lanzarote, you can grill a whole chicken in a volcano at Timanfaya National Park.

  7. Mount Teide in Tenerife is a popular area for those who love stargazing. The national park is not to be missed. Mount Teide’s summit is the highest peak in Spain.

  8. There is an abundance of all-inclusive resorts to choose from. From adults-only to kid-friendly, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to resorts. Start your search with Iberostar.

  9. Siam Park in Tenerife is a popular water park that is perfect for young children.

  10. For those who like water sports and adventure, such as a quad bike excursion, head to Fuerteventura. Corralejo is a buzzing seaside town in Fuerteventura filled with bars and tapas.
