While stationed in Italy, you may register up to three vehicles. No road tax will be charged for your primary car, but it will need to be paid for additional vehicles. Fuel rations are only available on your primary car.
If you want to purchase a new car while in Italy, consider buying from a dealer participating in the Military Car Sales program. Benefits can include tax-free transactions, worldwide shipping, U.S. specification vehicles and prices lower than U.S. MSRP rates.
All vehicles must be inspected before they can be registered. Make sure you have a an emergency kit with warning triangle, reflective vest and first-aid kit. Once inspected, you can make an appointment with the registration office.
Registration document requirements vary based on who the vehicle was purchased from and whether it isused or new. Contact your installation motor vehicle registration office for details on what is required.
A well-priced vehicle can be a hot commodity in Italy, but be sure to give yourself enough time prior to a PCS to get the vehicle sold and transferred to a new owner.
You can sell your car on base at the local lemon lot, list it in online marketplaces or take it to one of many car dealers who may buy it from you. Note It is often easiest to sell it to another military member or a dealer.
USED CAR BUYING HINTS
• You can buy a U.S. or Euro-spec vehicle. A Euro-spec car can not be shipped back to the U.S.
• Used cars can be found at your installation lemon lot, off-base dealers and online marketplaces.
• When looking at a used vehicle, ask for a full history and have a mechanic check the car for necessary repairs before finalizing the purchase.
• Be prepared to pay Italian road tax: €100-€500 (dependent on age and engine).
• It is not recommended to purchase a car from outside of Italy, since it can result in complications and higher fees.
