Evie King, AFI Military Spouse of the Year 2023 (Evie King)

Every year, Armed Forces Insurance awards one military spouse the title of “Military Spouse of the Year.” Military spouses all over the world compete for base, branch and overall titles. The 2023 overall winner, Evie King, just happens to be stationed in the Rheinland-Pfalz area and I had the opportunity to talk with her about her past year holding the title.

Evie was nominated for her work with the non-profit organization InDependent, which focuses on military spouse wellness- both physical and mental well-being. She won the 2023 Rheinland-Pfalz Spouse of the Year. Then, she won the combination of popular votes and judging points to win the 2023 Army Branch Spouse of the Year. Finally, her competition packet, featuring her AFI MSOY profile information, nominations, and previous voting activity was compared against the winning spouses from the other military branches to win the overall competition. Since winning, she has had the opportunity to educate others about her platform, attend conferences and appear on national news programs such as the Today Show.

With the nominations for the 2024 AFI Military Spouse of the Year competition now open, Evie has some tips for those being nominated or thinking about nominating someone.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask someone to nominate you.

  • You don’t have to make a global impact to make a difference.

Hear Evie talk about it in her own words in the clip below.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more videos where Evie will tell us all about the biggest challenges she saw in the military community, interesting places she has gone in the past year and more. To learn more about nominations, which are open until January 26, click here.
