Moving is always a big undertaking, but when you or your spouse is a service member, it's a way of life. Even if you're a pro at box assembly and strategic bubble wrapping, you can still use a little assistance.

Quick tips for reducing relocation stress

  • Use the Relocation Assistance Program. Don't hesitate to seek out counseling, planning assistance, information or referrals to reduce the stress of moving and maximize the benefits of military life.

  • Start planning early. Beginning as soon as possible allows you to make the most of the relocation assistance services offered to you and your family.

Basic relocation programs and services

  • Individual PCS planning: Making your first military move? Headed overseas for the first time? Need help with a family or financial situation that is complicating your move? Don't worry, you're not alone. Make an appointment at the Military and Family Support Center for a one-on-one consultation.

  • MilitaryINSTALLATIONS and Plan My Move: You can find information on more than 250 installations worldwide with these two online relocation tools. The tools will help you estimate expenses, find the necessary forms for housing and household goods, and even create a customized calendar.

  • Workshops and briefings: Take a look to see which workshops and briefings are available in your area. Workshops vary by installation so check with the Military and Family Support Center for a schedule of overall events.

  • Pre-departure briefings: Sometimes called Smooth Move or PCS briefings, these sessions are not to be missed. You'll get essential information that can prevent you from making uninformed or costly decisions before your move.

  • Settling-in services: Programs and services vary by location. Please check with your installation Military and Family Support Center regarding programs and services.

  • Foreign-born spouse support: The Military and Family Support Center can assist your foreign-born spouse with classes or referrals about immigration and naturalization, learning the English language or how to take local transportation. Programs and services vary by installation so be sure to check with the Relocation Assistance Program point of contact for additional information.

  • Emergency assistance: If you find yourself in a crisis, the Military and Family Support Center can assist emergency financial assistance and referrals.

  • Transition assistance: Your final move can feel like the biggest change of all. Luckily, the Military and Family Support Center is there to guide your transition to civilian life. The center will help you and your family complete all the required tasks and take full advantage of the available resources.
