Think German foods all pork knuckle and potatoes? Think again! Germany’s food and drink is widely varied and fiercely regional, and the city of Mainz is incredibly proud of its own culinary traditions. If you’re interested in learning more about German food beyond the stereotypical beer and bratwurst, why not join British-German food writer Christie Dietz and German wine expert Jérôme Hainz on a small group food and wine tour of Germany’s wine capital, and learn what the locals really like to eat and drink?
This three-hour, small group tour begins in a private cellar, where you’ll be introduced to some of the region’s best wines, accompanied by some of the locals’ favorite snacks. Next, you’ll explore the city on foot, learning about its history and culture – Mainz isn’t just Germany’s wine capital, it’s also the birthplace of modern typography and, thanks to its position on the Rhine River, it’s been an important trading center for over 2,000 years. You’ll stop to sample more food and wine along the way before the tour ends at a traditional Mainz wine tavern. There’ll be time for a cozy chat with a final glass of wine and bite to eat before you go on your way.

ABOUT THE TOUR GUIDES
Born in London, food and travel writer Christie Dietz moved to Wiesbaden (across the river from Mainz) with her German husband in 2010. Quickly discovering there was much more to the German cuisine than sausage and Sauerkraut, she began blogging about regional German food at A Sausage Has Two. As a freelancer, Christie’s a regular contributor to National Geographic Traveller (UK) and Fodor’s Germany travel guide, and she’s also written about German food and travel for The Guardian, Time Out and Singapore Airlines’ in-flight magazine.
Jérôme Hainz is the founder of boutique wine tour operator BottleStops. Born in Mainz, he only realized his deep love for the food and wines of Germany whilst living abroad in Asia – which he did for 15 years! After returning to Europe in 2015, Jérôme decided to spread the word about German wine and wine culture, and make it more accessible to international visitors, and so founded his very popular and successful BottleStops wine tours.
After meeting in 2017, Jérôme and Christie decided to join forces and create their small group Mainz Food & Wine Tour. They’ve sold out every tour to date, with participants joining from Wiesbaden, Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart – and much further afield! They’ve had fantastic feedback and reviews for the relaxed, friendly nature of the tours and the historical and culinary insights into Mainz. And of course the excellent wine and food!
