I’m no culinary professional. My palate is not very sophisticated. I can make an amazing macaroni and cheese, but I’ll never be a judge on “Chopped.” Somehow, I don’t think, “That was awesome!”, “Meh…” or “Dude, you shouldn’t bother serving that to anyone else.” would fly on that show. I just love food and I LOVE to eat! Because of said passion, a friend of mine told me about this amazing food-lover's mecca … FICO Eataly World.

This massive expanse of culinary heaven is nestled in Bologna, Italy. We’re talking over 1 million square-feet dedicated to growing, creating and consuming Italian cuisine (with some other influences sprinkled in). Create, savor and enjoy pasta, pizza, wine, desserts and so much more.

Cozy in la cucina

Cooking is half the fun of any eating experience. Wafting in the aroma of your dishes adds much more to the meal once you finally get to taste the end result. You could probably spend days, if not weeks, enjoying the array of courses offered at Eataly World. Learn how to make pasta, gelato or various candies, brew Italian beers or about the winemaking process. Become familiar with the art of wine tasting or how different olive oils and cheeses are made. If you’ve ever wanted to learn Italian, they have a class for that too. You’ll get to learn and eat all at the same time. Children can participate in classes specially made for their little hands. No one is excluded from the fun!

Take the journey through history on the six educational carousels. They’ve created a totally new way to learn about man’s integration with Earth and her resources. There is a cost for each carousel; however, more you buy, the more you save. If you want to see all six, buy the package and save two euros. They also offer family discounts.

Mangia!

Just thinking about all the delectable foods will make you hungry. The larger-than-life food court will satisfy any taste buds. With over 40 dining options, you may need someone to wheel you out. The real challenge is what to choose - mouthwatering pizza, fresh seafood, savory meats, deliciously messy street food or decadent desserts. If you stay long enough, you’ll have time to eat around.

Farm to table

It doesn’t get any more farm-fresh than Eataly World. In fact, they have almost two acres of amazing land dedicated to growing fresh crops and raising local farm animals. The kids will love seeing the cows, chickens and other animals up close. Personally, they just have me craving a medium-rare steak and eggs. No matter your perspective, its unique insight into farm to fork as taught by Italians.

Serious retail therapy

Do you get goosebumps just by walking into IKEA? Well, you haven’t seen anything yet! The 9,000 square-meter shopping plaza offers a vast selection of goodies to take home - fresh foods, unique kitchenware, fragrant flowers, hand-rolled cigars, home decor, organic hair and skin products … the list goes on!

Because the marketplace is so large, you can hop on an adult-sized tricycle equipped with baskets to ride from place to place. You won’t feel so guilty about all the superb food you’re going to consume when you’re able to get this much exercise.

Tip: Don’t worry if you’ve found more than what you can fit in your luggage. Ask the staff about shipping your purchases home with PosteItaliane.

While you’re planning your next trip to Italy, seriously considered making a stop for a day or two in Bologna. Eataly World will be worth every euro, minute and calorie!
