Stuttgart’s Kelley Barracks Theatre performance of “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” is a must-see for anyone nostalgic for the original TV show of the 1970’s and 80’s. And, really, this impressive comedy is fantastic even if you don’t know what “Schoolhouse Rock” is. Plus, this is an educational show, so be prepared to learn a few things!
Tom Mizer, played by Elias Stanton, is nervous to begin teaching. His funny performance is enjoyable to watch, and his experience is what leads us all into the classic Schoolhouse Rock songs. The large ensemble cast brings each number to life with vocals that fill the theater space. These talented youth bring a fast-paced energy to the stage as we are (re)introduced to favorites like “Three is a Magic Number,” “A Noun is a Person, Place or Thing,” and “Just a Bill.”
The stage is set to blend time periods by mixing old-school TVs alongside modern items like smartphones. Props (pun intended) to the props person who thought of hanging the adjectives on the smartphones as if they were apps. The effect was clever and fun. Another highlight was the choreography and interplay of items used in “Interplanet Janet.” The kids especially loved the shooting star.
Be prepared to sing along; you can’t resist. “Conjunction Junction” had the audience smiling and ready for an upbeat grammar lesson. During the musical number “Preamble” the cast encouraged the audience to join in the singing and the energy was palpable.
Directed by Rachel Kern and Mara Earp, this educational and nostalgic performance is perfect for the entire family. As our protagonist Tom sees his lesson plans and ideas come to life, his personality shines through. In the end, we all come to realize that learning can be fun, especially when it involves music and imagination.
