Christmas markets in Germany’s major cities are big business these days, attracting tourists from around the world. In contrast to these massive undertakings, smaller cities and towns will often stage their markets over just a single day or weekend. The market stalls are likely to be staffed by volunteers from the community’s clubs or churches, and a portion of the proceeds may benefit local initiatives. While you never know what type of goods might turn up there, honey from a local beekeeper or mittens knit by a town resident could be amongst the tiny treasures for sale there.
