planning a trip

planning a trip ()

Throughout most of my adult life up until the end of my college career, I was really good at one thing — procrastinating. Whether it be writing a long paper or paying the bills, I always waited until zero hour to get things done. It wasn’t really until I got a "real job" and started traveling that I understood the importance of planning in order to keep me on a budget. Now, especially when it comes to vacation, I live for Google Sheets and making “to-do” lists. In order to maximize your budget and create a hassle-free trip, consider these factors that will have you becoming the perfect travel planner.

Create a list containing all important information.

Whether it be an Excel sheet, or even handwritten, having a document listing your flight information, the name of accommodation you’ll be staying, the rental car company and any other information you may have will make it visually easier for you to know the basics of your trip. This also allows you to have it on hand if need-be.

Have all documentation in a folder.

Nothing’s more annoying than when you’re standing in line waiting for your rental car and suddenly realizing you have to rummage through your luggage or carry-on to find the crumpled booking information. Rather than appearing to be unorganized, invest in a folder, such as this one from Etsy.

Come up with a budget.

The perfect travel planner always plans a budget and, if planned correctly, may even have enough money for more trips in the not-so-distant future. There are even vacation budget planner templates available for download to make budgeting easier.

Plan an itinerary.

Though some travelers prefer to aimlessly wander the streets of Barcelona without a plan, creating a rough itinerary will at least maximize your time and will eliminate the “What should we do next?” question. I find it useful to create a list of the top attractions, foods native to your destination, best restaurants/bars and any other can’t-be-missed highlights.

Book everything ahead of time.

This point may seem like a no brainer, but sometimes due to pending leave or unforeseen circumstances, booking a flight, excursion or tour may be difficult to do early in advance. Keep in mind however, that the longer you wait, flights will be more expensive and tours may be sold out.
