The 21st century is truly an amazing era. The world’s mysteries unveiling and scientific discoveries progressing at an exponential rate have made this era truly mesmerizing, not to mention the plethora of disruptive technologies being introduced. However, as society has changed it has also brought aspects that have negatively impacted the quality of life and health of the population.

It is of vital importance to remind ourselves that the extension of the human life must be coupled with the extension of a “good” quality of life, which will encourage us to stay fit and healthy for a long period of time, allowing us to enjoy playing with our grandchildren just as much as we loved playing with our children.

There are three key words to think about for a good lifestyle: happiness, moderation and exercise. These might seem like simple concepts, but in reality they are difficult and complex goals that humans have been trying to achieve for a long time.

Happiness is vital in life. It keeps our mental health strong while allowing us to enjoy life and the company of the people we love. In fact, pathologies that negatively affect our mental health can have severe effects on our bodies, for instance, by acting on the neuro-endocrine system and decreasing our immune system’s ability to protect ourselves against diseases. Moderation also comes into play in the concept of happiness, as there are things that may increase our happiness, such as eating a warm cookie. At the same time, things like cookies must be consumed in moderation so that there are not negative consequences to our health.

In terms of exercise, this term can be used for both physical and mental exercise. Following the ration of 5:10:30, which recommends 5 portions of fruits and vegetables, 30 minutes of isotonic and heart-supportive physical exercise and 0 cigarettes smoked, an individual is on the right path to a balanced lifestyle. Regarding mental health, it is also important to keep our mind busy and active. This will lead to at least two positive consequences: first, it will protect us against age-related dementias and cognitive deterioration, and second, it will keep our mind busy and improve our mental health.

Therefore, let us have fun and be happy while keeping our mind and bodies healthy for a long and joyous life!
