Veterans at Italy’s National Unification and Armed Forces Day celebration in Naples (Katie Wells)
On November 4, 1918, at the end of World War I, Italy celebrated their victory by completing its unification process with an armistice. When the Armistice of Villa Giusti was signed, it marked Italy’s victory over the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is a day to celebrate national unity and the sacrifices made to achieve and defend it.
Since 1919, National Unification and Armed Forces Day has been celebrated as a national holiday every November 4. It is also a day to remember the sacrifices made and lives lost.
When planning a trip to Naples, Italy, I happened to see that in past years, a parade or demonstration to commemorate the unification had been held. However, in my research, it quickly became clear there were no official times for the event.

I asked Victoria, my friend living in Naples, if she knew anything about the event. But alas, she also couldn’t find much. This is the Napoli way. Events are sometimes found by happenstance and often by word of mouth and luck. We decided to chance it and made our way to the Piazza del Plebiscito the morning of the fourth. We planned to get there at 9 a.m. (my research found that in previous years a parade started around then). We ended up being late; however, with a little luck, the event kicked off slowly. It wasn’t until late morning, 11-ish, that it actually started.
The Piazza, where many events are held in Naples, was perfect. There was a view of Vesuvius in the distance, and the ceremony was set against the backdrop of the royal palace. The sound of the military band was amplified beautifully.
While Victoria translated most of the announcements made only in Italian, the celebration was an honor to witness. As each branch marched in, I could feel the pride the service members felt, pride that doubled when the war veterans marched in with their flags held high. The chattering of the crowd hushed in respect.
Another highlight of the event was the raising of the Italian flag. The piazza filled with the ringing of the clock tower bells and the operatic singing of the Italian National Anthem, “Il Canto degli Italiani.”

While we couldn’t translate all that was being said, it was clear when an official representative relayed a message from the President of Italy. Based on the reaction of all who were there, I imagine it was a bestowment of gratitude and inspiration.
For those stationed at Naples, or for those planning a visit, remember to head to the Piazza del Plebiscito on November fourth, sip an espresso and enjoy a sfogliatella pastry at a nearby café while listening for the sound of the military band. If you hear it, you may be lucky and see a special commemoration of military history.
