Your go-to vacation spot: Garmisch-Partenkirchen

After travelling across Europe for several years and jet-setting to country after country, I can honestly say that at any given moment I would be up for yet another trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany. Without a doubt, Garmisch has stolen my heart. The breathtaking scenery, incredible hiking opportunities and adorable downtown area all come together to create the perfect vacation location.

I’m one of those people who is more than happy to return to a place and do the same activity time and time again. The one thing I have to do every time I go to Garmisch is hike through the Höllental Gorge. I always start my adventure at the hiker’s parking lot in Hammersbach where there is direct access to the trail leading to the gorge. Don’t let the gorge’s other name, “Hell’s Valley,” deter you from making this amazing hike. The surrounding nature is so pure and perfect that you can hardly believe your eyes. Once you’ve gotten through the gorge, the best part is yet to come. Go just a little further and there is a restaurant called Höllentalanger Hut where you can reward yourself with some delicious food after your strenuous hike. I highly recommend the “käsespätzle,” which is essentially German macaroni and cheese.

For another incredibly scenic activity, be sure to take a stroll around Eibsee. This beautiful mountain lake is at the foot of the Zugspitze (Germany’s tallest mountain). Here you can swim, boat, fish or paddleboard. The trail around the entire lake is 4.66 miles and easy to walk with minimal inclines. It takes around two hours to complete. Grab some gelato before you set out and keep your camera ready, as the photo opportunities are endless!

Garmisch’s downtown area is absolutely charming and worth an hour to explore. Elaborately painted buildings, doner kebab stands and shops are in abundance here. Be sure to stop at Zum Wildschutz for a dinner of traditional Bavarian cuisine. Consider schnitzel, flammkuchen and plenty of beer for the perfect dining experience. End your meal with some apple strudel and you’re sure to leave satisfied.

My advice to you—if you ever get the opportunity to visit this charming city, even for a few hours, do it! It’s also delightful in the winter as a skiing location. If you love outdoor adventures, beautiful scenery and all things Bavarian, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the ideal place for you.
