The Middle Ages were a time full of myth and legend, and nothing is more legendary than a dragon.

See an ancient legend come to life August 4-20 with Germany’s oldest folk festival; spearing the Furth Dragon. With a 500-year tradition, along with some impressive pyrotechnics and the largest four-legged walking robot in the world (the Furth Dragon has been registered in the Guinness Book of World Records) the city of Furth has definitely figured out how to put on a fantastic show!

The dragon-slaying is enacted ten times or so during the festival – giving participants multiple chances to catch the battle. And it truly is a battle; one that involves over 1,400 participants, about 250 horses and all manner of props from wagons to cannons.

Make no mistake about it – the Furth dragon really is a monster. It weighs in at eleven tons, stands nearly fifteen feet (4.5 meters) tall and measures over 49 feet (15 meters) in length. It roars, breathes fire and smoke and has a 52-foot (16 meters) wingspan!

Once the dragon has been heroically battled, there's an exciting program of pageant activities to include a medieval market, bird of prey displays, a grand historical parade and a traditional German volksfest with a beer garden. Because battling dragons makes for very thirsty work.

Always remember, it’s simply not an adventure worth telling if there aren’t any dragons. – J.R.R. Tolkien
