Why: Hiking, Spas & a Theme Park
Length: (205 kilometers, 4 nights)

Baden-Baden (1.5 days, 1 night)

The Black Forest is a densely wooded, hilly area of southwest Baden-Württemberg and home to thermal baths, cuckoo clocks, tasty desserts and waterfalls. Start your journey through the region in Baden-Baden, the most famous of Germany’s resort towns. Rejuvenate at the kid-friendly Caracalla Spa, elegant adults-only Friedrichsbad thermal baths or peaceful Salina Sea Salt Grotto. You won’t run out of things to do, see or eat with Germany’s oldest casino, medieval castle ruins, Victorian mansions, a renowned garden, high-end boutiques and diverse eateries within walking distance.

Baiersbronn (overnight)

Baiersbronn is a tiny village 45 kilometers south on the B462 that has not one, not two, but four Michelin-starred restaurants and several less expensive Michelin-recommended options. Book at a quaint B&B or splurge on five-star accommodations at Hotel Traube Tonbach to sleep off your food coma.

Triberg (2.5 hours)

Set out bright and early on the scenic B500 to Triberg, and follow signs to the parking area for the waterfall (Triberger Wasserfälle). From the lot, it’s a five-minute walk to the 530-foot-high wall of rushing water that cascades over rocks and under pedestrian bridges. Afterward, stop at a café and order the chocolate, cherry and whipped cream goodness known as Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte).

Waldkirch (3-6 hours)

Hop on the B294 and make the 50-minute drive to Waldkirch for an afternoon outdoor adventure. Hike or bike the Kandel trail to summit one of the Black Forest’s highest peaks. Those seeking a less strenuous activity can find equally lovely views from the treetop path (Baumkronenweg), a wooden walkway suspended 75 feet above ground.

Freiburg (overnight)

Leave by late afternoon for Freiburg, a university town with cobblestone streets, pastel-colored half-timbered houses and flower-lined canals. Try foods from around the globe at Markthalle, and wash it down with local brews at Brauerei Ganter or Martin’s Braü. Don’t stay out too late because a long day awaits.

Rust (1 day, 1 night)

Hit the road for Europa-Park in Rust, 40 kilometers northwest of Freiburg. Named the best travel destination in Germany four years in a row by Stripes readers, adults and kids are guaranteed to have a blast here. The park’s 14 areas are themed after countries and fairy-tale lands. Purchase tickets in advance and overnight close by because you will be exhausted after your day of fun.
