The experience of European festivals and parades is not to be rivaled. Not just because of the sheer volume of them, but because of the embedded history and theatrical flair in which they’re exhibited. Belgium may be a relatively small country in the European Union, but they are not to be outdone. The Ommegang was started to commemorate the coming of Charles the Fifth to Brussels in 1549. In 1930, the people of Brussels instituted the modern-day version of this celebration.

You will witness an epic parade of more than 1,400 people on July 5 and 7 (yes, that’s two parades) starting at 8:45 p.m. that includes actors in folk and historic costumes, puppeteers, giants, horses and more. There is also a special appearance of Charles V’s carriage. Beginning at the Royal Park, the parade will travel through main streets and pass through the ancient cobblestones of the Grand Palace. Ticket prices to view the parade from the palace start at 40 euros. Brussels Park will play host to a fantastic medieval village with tournaments July 5 to 8. Make sure to visit the medieval market set up at the Place Agora located behind the Brussels Stock Exchange. You will be able to find high-quality merchandise made by craftsmen from around Europe.

Visit the event’s official website for additional information on the festivities. You can read up on the history of the affair. You may also book your seats at the Grand Palace viewing area.
