Berlin may be Germany’s capital with millions populating the metropolis, but Hamburg is a close runner up. This busy port city is one of Europe's independent city-states with a rich history. Filled with spectacular views, charming cafes and quaint canals Hamburg is one city not to be missed.

The Speicherstadt, Hamburg’s famous warehouse district, can be seen when you book a harbor boat tour. The warehouse complex was built in 1883 and housed coffee, tea, spices and even chocolate. Some boat tours also run at night giving the complex a more alluring look.

Elbphilharmonie is a multi-purpose building that serves as a concert hall, hotel, parking garage and more. Towering over the HafenCity quarter, it offers a 360-degree view of the Elbe River and great photo opportunities. Get there early as lines can be quite long.

Chocoversum Chocolate Museum is a chocolate lovers' place to be. Channel your inner Willy Wonka while satisfying your sweet tooth with a tour through the Chocoversum Chocolate Museum. The tours are 90 minutes long, ranging from 12-15 euros. Family tickets range from 34-46 euros.

Hamburg's City Hall

Hamburg Rathaus is located in Hamburg's Old Town and has been in existence since 1897. With 647 rooms and impressive architecture, the building is considered new and is the sixth edition in Hamburg’s history. It’s open to the public Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

St. Michael’s Church, the largest church in Hamburg, is a must-see. The church's bell tower will give you an awesome view of the harbor. Standing since 1912, the church can hold 2,000 people in its nave (center of the church). There’s also a crypt (burial chamber) blow the church, where 2,000 people have apparently been buried.

Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany. Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway, some tasty street food, or just learning the history, time spent in Hamburg will not disappoint.
