If you’ve been searching for an incredible hiking opportunity in Germany, look no further! The Rheinsteig Hiking Trail is a popular hiking destination that stretches for about 200 miles on a dirt path. It follows the majestic Rhine River from Bonn to Wiesbaden (or vice versa) and wanders through woodlands, vineyards, rustic villages and past imposing castles and ruins. It’s the perfect spot to get “lost” in nature. But not too lost!

To begin your adventure, the trailhead in Wiesbaden is at Biebrich Castle. If you prefer to start In Bonn, the trail begins at the market square in the town center. The entire trail is easy to navigate with signs along the way directing you. Be aware that this is not a remote hike that takes you out into the wild; rather you go through many villages and never wander too far away from civilization.

Hikers should expect an easy to moderate trail and should be able to climb some hills and have an average fitness level. The trail gains 3,000 feet in elevation, but isn’t for the faint of heart, as it takes quite a while to complete the entire thing. You can plan on around 18-21 days to do the whole route, but you can also just focus on one area. It is incredibly easy to reach different spots along the trail by train from Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz and Wiesbaden. This means you don’t have to start in Bonn or Wiesbaden if you don’t want to. The best time to complete the hike is from July - early September.

While on your adventure, you can stay at any one of the various hotels along the way, or even at a vineyard. This is incredibly convenient, as you don’t have to pack and haul sleeping gear with you. Plus, you’ll have access to a hot shower at the end of each hiking stage! When you set off on your hiking adventure, be sure to bring sturdy shoes, plenty of water and sunscreen for any extra hot days. Breathable clothing with built-in UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) is also handy. For your hiking itinerary, consider bookmundi.com's routes.

There are so many ways to conquer this trail. Maybe complete the entire trail over the course of the summer if you are close enough to hop onto some of the various stages. Or perhaps just be happy with one stage and the opportunity to get out in the fresh air. There’s no right or wrong way to hike this trail. Whether you go with your dog, your kids, your significant other or even solo, you’re sure to have a great time.
