Are you searching for an adventure for the entire family? Look no further than Salt Mine Berchtesgaden. You will find a combination of both education and excitement in Germany’s oldest, active salt mine. Touring a salt mine may not sound appealing at first. However, it’s whole other story when you and your family can experience it like true miners!

Start the tour by dressing into traditional miner jumpsuits and then take a train through the windy, underground tunnels. The salty aroma fills the air as you get deeper into the salt mine. When the train stops, your tour guide will walk you through various points informing you about the history of the salt mine. One of the main attractions are the two 36 meter-long miners’ slides. Remember to smile on your way down for a photo opp! Another popular attraction is the boat ride across Mirror Lake featuring a mesmerizing light show. Don’t be afraid to admit if you enjoy the tour more than your kids do!

Once your mining adventure is over you’ll end up in the gift shop buying salt rocks, salt crystals, natural salt lamps and mini saltshakers for family and friends. When hunger strikes after all of your touring and shopping indulge in various German delicacies at the Gasthaus Reichenbach Restaurant. The restaurant is part of an inn that was converted from the salt mine’s old machinery building. Interestingly enough, a lot of the original equipment from the machinery building can still be found in the inn today.

There are different entrance fees for the salt mine. The Family Card is 39 euros and covers the admission for two adults and one child. Each additional child you have is 5.50 euros. If you have little ones under the age of three they get in for free. However, strollers aren’t allowed during the tour. You can buy your tickets at the ticket office or online up to 30 minutes before a tour.

The Salt Mine Berchtesgaden can easily be done in a half-day. However, there are also popular spots nearby including Eagle’s Nest, Lake Königssee and Salzburg, Austria. There are many choices to fill your itinerary with for a weekend adventure that your family will love.
