Exploring the UK in a day: Norwich

Now that the stay-at-home order has been lifted in England, it’s time to think about heading out the door for new adventures. While we cannot travel internationally or across the Welsh and Scottish borders (yet), ease your way into exploring this amazing country with a day trip to Norwich. Situated near the coast, approximately one hour east of RAF Lakenheath and 90 minutes from RAF Alconbury and Molesworth, this fantastic city is a great starting point.

The county seat of Norfolk, the history of Norwich is on full display. Famously known as one of the most complete medieval cities in the U.K., much of the architecture dates back to the 11thcentury. The Norwich Cathedral has seen more than 1,000 years of turmoil, war and pandemics. Dramatic arches, towering spires and ornate vaulted ceilings contribute to this beautiful house of worship. The stout square fortress of the Norwich Castle houses an eclectic array of historical dioramas and a gallery of wildlife exhibits.

Visitors can step back in time as they walk along the cobblestone streets of Elm Hill. Colorful half-timbered houses precariously line the narrow sidewalks. Pass through the St. Ethelbert or Erpingham Gates, the two surviving gates to the cathedral dating back to the Middle Ages. Grab a takeaway picnic from a local pub (there are plenty to choose from) and drink in the sights along the River Wensum or the Whitlingham Great Broad. Marvel movie fans will want to stop by the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia, which doubled as the Avengers’ headquarters.

With so much to see and experience, you’ll want to put Norwich on your U.K. day trip bucket list.
