Love it for: picturesque alleyways and a pretty mix of lovingly restored half-timbered, Baroque and gabled homes.

Location: 28 miles / 35 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern

Love it for: castle ruins surrounded by a landscape garden, traces of walls that once surrounded the town, and a pair of interesting churches. It also has a brewery serving its own beer.

Location: 25 miles north / 40 minutes north of Kaiserslautern

Love it for: its well-preserved town center with charming squares, cobblestone streets, museums, cafes and an artsy flair.
