The Bonn balloon festival will take your breath away

A favorite memory from my family’s time at Fort Bliss was getting up at the crack of dawn to watch hot air balloons race against the sun to rise over the monochromatic desert and fill the sky with color. Watching the seemingly weightless aircrafts slowly inflate, then lift off the ground to decorate the heavens was truly an unforgettable, almost spiritual experience … one I’d love to repeat if I had the chance. And, now I do — in Europe, no less!

Bonn will host its breathtaking Balloon Festival (Ballonfestival Bonn) from Friday, June 9 to Sunday, June 11. Twenty-five teams from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland will participate in five launches planned for the weekend. Be there to witness sunset starts Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6:30 p.m and sunrise lifts on Saturday and Sunday at 6:30 a.m. The highlight of the weekend is the stunning balloon glow, which will be held Saturday night at 11 p.m.

In between launches, there will be plenty of activities for kids young and old, including bungee trampolines, bicycle courses, ballooning competitions and more. Food vendors will also be on site to offer tasty street fare to hungry fest-goers.

Be sure to dress in layers, bring blankets and pack a thermos of hot coffee, tea or cocoa to keep you warm. Also, please note that launches are weather dependent, so it is important to check the forecast to anticipate any delays or cancellations.

If you’ve ever dreamed of flying over a European city in a hot air balloon, reserve a limited spot in one of the baskets at www.ballonfestival-bonn.de. Fees start at 179 euros per person.
