At the end of March, my friend Mandy and I road-tripped around Belgium and the Netherlands. We heard it may be too early to see the famed bluebells in the Hallerbos Forest, but I had a good feeling we’d see the blanket of blue coloring the forest floor.

As we traveled from Brunssum to Chièvres, the car got pelted with rain, sleet and hail. Mandy and I agreed that if 20 minutes out, the weather was still poor, we would skip it this time. However, typical of the Benelux weather, the rain cleared, and Google Maps took us on a hairy adventure along a steep, dirt farm road to the Hallerbos parking lot.
We picked a random trail, and about five minutes into the forest, we walked down into a valley where two lush hills rose on either side of us. The sun peeked out, illuminating dew on the signature blue flowers everywhere.

A cheerful flower with a buttery yellow color, the daffodil is a sign of spring. Head to the Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, NL, or pop in to the nearby FAM Flower Farm for tea and a special photoshoot. Be sure to make a reservations in advance. Find the daffodils close to Chièvres on a hike at Caillou-qui-Bique in Honneles, Belgium.

In the Netherlands, head to the famed Keukenhof Gardens or get off the beaten path and cycle the Tulip Route in Flevoland for the largest continuous flower bulb area in the country.
