The 2026-2027 Stars and Stripes “European Road Guide” includes country-specific driving laws, vehicle purchase information and other essential details for drivers while stationed in Europe.
Children under the height of 1.35 meters (4 ft. 5 inches) must be buckled into safety seat designed for their size.
Car seats must comply with one of two current regulations. An orange label will indicate the compliance.
R44: Seat design is based on the child’s weight. These seats were phased out in 2024 and cannot be bought or sold, but are still legal to use.
R129: Called i-Size, seat design is based on the child’s height. This is the current standard and the only option when buying a new car seat.

i-Size compliant seats are chosen based on your child’s height.
The type of restraint (booster, seat, harness, etc.) is determined by the manufacturer and has undergone stringent testing to be approved as safe for that height.
i-Size infant seats are rear-facing until the child is 15 months old.
i-Size uses the ISOFIX latching system. ISOFIX and U.S. LATCH anchors have the same spacing.
