Tips to ensure summer slumbers

Living in Europe, some regions are welcomed with daylight for an extended period of time during the day and into the evening. If you have kids or need to wake up early for work, it can be hard to close your eyes when the sun is still shining. Although you’re relieved the dark winter months are over, it can be annoying when you need to sleep. Here are some tips to get you through the night.

· Lower the temperature of you room.  People tend to sleep better when their room is cool. Turn on the fan or lower that thermostat.

· Avoid daylight at night and expose yourself to daylight in the early morning. Avoiding sunlight before bed can help regulate your sleep cycle. Try a sleep mask. Many European houses have shutters (Rolladen) that block out the light, or use black-out curtains. Closing off your house from daylight can also help in lowering the temperatures of your sleeping environment.

· Do your daily exercise early. Although a solid exercise can get you a good night’s sleep, give your body at least three hours to cool down before you lay down to rest, otherwise you will be too stimulated.

· Stop eating heavy foods four hours before sleeping. Allow your body time to relax before bed by not eating foods that will wake up your body, like spices or caffeine.

· Block out the sound. Use earplugs. Noise levels are a large reason many people can’t sleep. Especially if you live in a city where it is noisy at night or construction early in the morning.

· Avoid late night alcohol. Although alcohol can make you sleepy, it won’t guarantee the best night’s sleep. Once you get to bed, you’ll find yourself waking up a lot having disturbed sleep. Skip the evening alcohol.

· Of course, turn off your technology. You’ve heard it before, but somehow, it’s probably still hard to not lay in bed scrolling on your phone before bed. Turning off the blue light from our devices helps to get a better night’s sleep. Shut down around 30 minutes before bedtime.

Catch up on the Zzz’s you’ve been missing since the sun started staying out longer. Listen to your body to get as much rest and relaxation you need. Follow these tips to welcome an undisturbed night’s snooze during the sunny months.
