The latest installment of the “28” zombie horror film series has finally hit streaming services. “28 Years Later” takes place, not surprisingly, 28 years after the Rage Virus first consumed the English mainland.

This film’s protagonist, 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams), lives on Lindisfarne Island and exists in an essentially pre-2002 world after England was completely quarantined after the events of the second film “28 Weeks Later.” He is escorted to the mainland with his father for his first zombie hunt which sets off the events of the film. Although the third installment of the series takes a slightly different tone and adds a few more types of zombies than the previous two (resulting in mixed reviews from audiences), the chills and thrills are still present.

Since moving to Europe, I have had the pleasure of visiting the U.K. several times. As I watched the horror and gore on screen, sometimes, albeit through my fingers, I found myself repeating “Oh hey, I’ve been there,” and “I know where that is.” If you want to try and spot a zombie, be it an Alpha, Slow-Low or original Fast “rage-virus” zombie in real life, here are some of the filming locations.

Lindisfarne aka the Holy Island: I first recognized the Holy Island on-screen when watching “The Last Kingdom,” but this tidal island also made for the perfect setting in a universe where zombies exist and haven’t yet figured out long-distance swimming. I found it interesting that the characters hide out in a church that is said to be on the mainland in the film; however, in reality, it is actually on Holy Island.

Cheddar Gorge: On screen, the final scene of the film takes place in the Gorge with a showdown of the protagonist and infected. In reality, this town is where Cheddar Cheese originated and where archeologists discovered “Cheddar Man,” Britain’s oldest human skeleton, estimated to be 9,000 years old.

Kielder: The Kielder Forest is “England’s largest.” It is also where the film’s protagonist traverses on his very first zombie hunt. While looking for zombies, also check out the local wildlife, the gorgeous stargazing opportunities and the town’s art scene. The Kielder Water Hydroelectric Facility also plays a small role in the film as Swedish soldiers must fight a horde of infected there.

Sycamore Gap: History buffs will recognize this famous gap along Hadrian’s Wall. When the gap with the tree appeared on the screen, my immediate reaction was “I wonder if they filmed this before the tree was illegally cut down (in 2023) or if they CGI’ed the tree in.” Be careful when you’re up there: The ground can be really muddy (I speak from personal experience) and that makes it harder to run from those fast rage-virus zombies if you were to spot one.

These are just a few of the spots throughout Northern England you can find in the film. Look for Somerset, Yorkshire and Newton-on-the-Moor in the background of shots and in the interior of buildings.
