Decor and stand at the Pilsen Christmas Market on a snowy day (Tamala Malerk)

Traditionally, the Pilsen (Plzeň) Christmas Market (known locally as Adventní trhy) begins around Thanksgiving and ends right before Christmas Eve annually. It features traditional Czech items, including Czech mistletoe. Unlike the American usage of this greenery to receive kisses, in Czechia mistletoe is used primarily as a table decoration to frame plates, put in a vase or hung from a chandelier. It is believed to be bestow upon the recipient good luck if given as a gift.

Like many Christmas markets, in Pilsen vendors deal primarily in cash except for higher-priced items, and you do need Czech currency (Kronos) as many places do not accept euros, and no one accepts USD. Fret not, there are two ATMS directly outside the market square to assist you.

Along with tasty treats such as Czech mulled wine, known as Svařák, and foods, you can find handmade items, including socks, stuffed animals and pillows made from alpaca and sheep’s wool. There was a blacksmith on site making items, and I got myself a metal rose.

On some days they have live farm animals on site, and you can also ride the large Ferris wheel to get a great view of the area.

In 2025, The Pilsen Christmas Market will occur from Nov. 22 through Dec. 23 on Republic Square. For opening hours and other information, go to their website.
