There’s no doubt that watermelon is at the top of the best summer snacks list. We know watermelon is refreshing and delicious, but it has so much more to offer than it’s sweet taste. Watermelon’s nutrient rich components do wonders for your body. Here are some benefits of your favorite red fruit:

1. Helps you hydrate

Watermelon is 92 percent water, which not only helps quench your thirst but also keep your body hydrated. Rehydration salts such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are also found throughout watermelon. Next time you’re feeling thirsty drink a glass of water and munch on a bowl of watermelon for the ultimate refreshment.

2. Aids in weight loss

Watermelon is low in calories with only 40 calories per cup and loaded with nutrients. It’s high water content helps keep you fuller longer which can prevent you from overeating or snacking on unhealthy foods. Watermelon also has natural sugars making it a great option to satisfy your sweet tooth.

3. Reduce muscle soreness

Did your intense workout from yesterday leave you sore this morning? Next time try eating some watermelon before and after your gym session. Amino acids aid in muscle recovery. Watermelon contains a specific amino acid called L-citrulline, which is vital to relieving muscle soreness.

4. Assists in having healthy skin and hair

Vitamins A and C are abundant throughout watermelon. These two vitamins are key for glowing skin and healthy hair. Collagen is produced from Vitamin C and assists in strengthening your hair and keeping your skin looking young. Vitamin A produces and repairs skin cells, which reduces wrinkles, dryness and flakiness.

5. Keeps your eyesight in check

Vitamin A doesn’t end with great skin and hair, it keeps your eyes healthy too! Beta-carotene is a great chemical compound that is transformed in your body to Vitamin A. Vitamin A plus lycopene produce the pigments in the eye’s retina and protects the eye from blindness and age-related eye problems.

Next time you’re at the store, pick up a watermelon to enjoy its taste and amazing healthy benefits. Sliced, juiced, cubed or scooped straight out with a spoon, watermelon is a wonderful snack that can be enjoyed year-round!
