At the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, Scouts from across Spain and Italy gathered for the annual Order of the Arrow Mamchachwelendam Chapter Spring Fellowship service project.

The Florence American Cemetery, which honors 4,398 American military dead and memorializes 1,409 missing in action from World War II, stands as one of the most solemn reminders of the cost of freedom in Europe.

For more than 15 years, Scouts of the Transatlantic Council have quietly served at this sacred site, carefully placing flags, cleaning headstones and preparing the cemetery grounds ahead of Memorial Day observances.

Working in silence beneath the Tuscan sun, Scouts reflected on the ideals of brotherhood, cheerful service and remembrance. Many of the participating youth come from active-duty military families stationed across Europe, making the experience especially personal and meaningful.

On Memorial Day morning, Scouts proudly raised both the American and Italian flags together during the ceremony, symbolizing the enduring friendship and shared sacrifice between nations.

There are few places more powerful for a Scout than a U.S. military cemetery overseas, a place where history, sacrifice and service come together in profound silence.

Across the Transatlantic Council, Scouts honored Memorial Day not simply through words, but through action.

They carried flags. They read the names and stories of the fallen. They stood in silence. They served with humility and respect.

These moments remind us that Memorial Day is a promise that those who gave everything in service to others will always be remembered.
