What began as a simple observation turned into a lasting gift for the military community, thanks to the determination of a local Scout.
John Maximus “Max” Arteaga, a 14-year-old freshman at H-Farm International School and member of Troop 295, recently completed his Eagle Scout conservation and leadership project by restoring three deteriorating flower beds at Vicenza Elementary School, a space widely used by teachers and students for hands-on learning.

The flower beds, once vibrant tools for outdoor education, had fallen into disrepair over time. Rotting wood and exposed nails created safety hazards for the children who used them regularly, putting a stop to what had been an important interactive learning environment.
Max saw more than just damaged structures—he saw a need.
“I saw the need to repair these flower beds,” he said, “and I hope it benefits everybody that uses them for educational purposes at Vicenza Elementary School for many years to come.”

Max’s journey in Scouting began at just six years old as a Tiger in Cub Scouts. Over the years, he steadily worked his way up through the ranks, building leadership skills, resilience, and a commitment to service. Now a Life Scout, he is on the final stretch toward earning the prestigious Eagle Scout rank—an achievement attained by only a small percentage of Scouts.
For his project, Max led volunteers in removing the unsafe materials and rebuilding the beds into sturdy, safe, and functional learning spaces. The restored garden areas will once again serve as outdoor classrooms where military-connected students can engage directly with nature, planting, observing, and learning through experience.

Teachers at Vicenza Elementary rely on these garden beds as a valuable extension of their classrooms, making Max’s project not just a repair effort, but a meaningful investment in education.
Beyond the physical transformation, Max’s work highlights the strength of the military community in Vicenza, where families, educators, and volunteers come together to support one another. His leadership and initiative demonstrate how young people can make a tangible difference in the lives of others.

As students return to the revitalized garden beds, they do so in a safer environment—one that will continue to grow knowledge and curiosity for years to come.
For Max, the project is more than a requirement for Eagle Scout, it’s a legacy of service rooted in the values he’s developed since his earliest days in Scouting.
And for the Vicenza military community, it’s a reminder that even the smallest spaces when cared for can have a lasting impact.
