How to stay healthy on vacation
We all need a break from the real world from time to time. Whether you’re taking the weekend or two weeks off, you have already completed the first step by making time for yourself. Don’t stop there! Making small changes to the way you travel can be effortless if you set your mind to it.
Stop checking your phone all the time. Vacation is supposed to be spent relaxing, experiencing new things and focusing on yourself and the people you’re traveling with. The last thing you need to be doing is constantly refreshing your work e-mail, seeing what other people are up to on social media and watching the newest viral video. Take a break from the digital world and use your phone when you absolutely need it. It may be a hard habit to break at first but you’ll come to find how peaceful it is to unplug.
Squeeze in exercise
Although working out may not be high on your priority list while on vacation, it’s hard to deny the great feeling you have after a good sweat session. Try to find 10 to 30 minutes of exercise first thing in the morning or before you go to bed. If you’re staying at a hotel there will usually be a small gym with cardio machines and free weights that you can use. However, you don’t always need a gym to have a good workout. Lace up your running shoes and explore the city with a quick run or power walk. There are tons of apps you can download to instruct you through an intense bodyweight workout you can do anywhere. Remaining active while on vacation will make it easier to get back into your routine at home.
If you ever wanted to win a FitBit challenge then choosing to walk majority of your trip is the way to do it! You can easily surpass your 10,000 daily step goal and annihilate anyone else who may be up for the Weekend Warrior title. Not only is walking a guaranteed way to keep you moving, it also gives you the chance to see the area in a way you couldn’t with public transportation. You can discover a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, beautiful park that the locals like to spend their time in or path that leads you to a place with breathtaking views. You never know what you may find!
Cook your own meals
Part of traveling is indulging in the local foods so give yourself a designated meal or two to eat out for each day. If your accommodation is equipped with a kitchen then you’re all set for the remaining meals. Run down to the grocery store and pick out ingredients to make your favorite healthy dishes. Not only is cooking a healthier option, but it’s a cheaper one as well.
Snack smart and stay hydrated
A great way to find healthy snacks while traveling is stopping in at a local grocery store or farmer’s market. Pick up fresh fruit, nuts, lunchmeat, yogurts or a small pre-made salad. You can also stock up on bottled water or pack your favorite water bottle beforehand and refill it throughout your trip. Traveling can be exhausting in itself so staying hydrated is important to keep you from feeling drained.
Trying to balance a memorable trip and healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be difficult. Making small changes to the way you travel will guide you to have a healthier vacation. Instilling these tips will also ease you back into your fitness routine once your trip is over. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself on your vacation!
