Weekend What’s Up: Sept. 2-4

In our monthly What’s Up magazine, our Editor’s Picks give you heads up you about eight of the best events going on in Germany. But it’s hard to just pick eight, so here’s a more inclusive list! Each week, we will give you the need-to-know for on-base and regional events.

Regions include the KMC, Rhine-Main, Stuttgart and Bavaria.

 

Kaiserslautern/KMC

Friday

Nanstein Castle, Landstuhl: Sickingen Highland Music Festival: Enjoy great beer and two bands opening on night one of two of the festival. Starts at 7 p.m. both days.

Reil: Junk and Wine 2022: Drink wine and shop high-quality art, secondhand items and craftwork at day one of this event. Happening all weekend.

Baumholder Warrior Zone (MWR): Lazy Day Pajama Jam: Throw on your best pajamas for a night of music, fun and the funniest pajamas contest.

Armstrong's Club, Vogelweh Housing (MWR): Karaoke Night: Belt out your favorite tunes.

Landstuhl Community Club (MWR): Friday Night Pool Tournament: “First-place winners receive $50, second place receives $25, and third place receives $10.”

 

Saturday

Homburg: Family and Children Fest:  Fun for the entire family awaits you at this fest with sports, stages, games and food.

Otterburg: Time Travel: Advertised as an English-language event, mobile virtual reality glasses allow you to travel in time between the 1200s and 1600s as you feel the wind in your face and hear the clatter of horse hooves.

Pirmasens: Flight day on the Pott Schütthöhe: Enjoy flight demonstrations, model airplanes, learn how to get your pilot license and take a sightseeing flight at day one of this event.

Idar-Obenstein: Tattoo Convention: Come get tattoo or pierced by one (or more) of 60 tattoo artists onsite until Sunday.  

Trier: “Blue-White” at  Ehranger Market: Enjoy drinks and snacks at this multi-day music festival.

Kazabra Club, Vogelweh (MWR): Country Night: Play pool, ride the mechanical bull and “boot, scoot and boogie” at Country Night.

Tavern on the Rock, Baumholder (MWR): Karaoke Night: Belt out your favorite tunes.

 

Sunday

Warrior Zone, Baumholder (MWR): Karaoke: Belt out your favorite tunes.

Trier: “Blue-White” at  Ehranger Market: Enjoy drinks and snacks at this multi-day music festival.

Rhine-Main

Friday

Frankfurt: Wein Market: Choose from over 600 wines from 25 stands at this event, going on until September 9.

Mainz: Wine market in the city park: Enjoy music, wine tasting, the artist market and children’s program at this multi-day event.

Mainz: SCHIFF Open-Air-Kino (Movie Theater):  The Batman will be played in German, but you may be able to use the Greta app to listen to the movie in English or another language.

 

Saturday

Frankfurt: Golden Twenties, end of Mankai Festival: The Electro Swing Collective brings an exciting swing show to the stage combining classic and modern music.

Frankfurt/Hainburg: Bull riding: Enjoy music, watch others ride the bull or, if you are feeling adventurous, try it yourself.

Wiesbaden: “Roller Derby - full contact sport between feminism and DIY culture” Discussion and Q&A: Learn all about the history and culture of Roller Derby in this lecture.

Wiesbaden: Painting Miniatures Workshop: Non Metallic Metal: For the tabletop game players out there, this event will help your miniature painting skills. 

Wiesbaden: Volunteer Day: Register help paint the hocket field walls, beautify the gardens, or one of the many activities open to all ages to help make Wiesbaden beautiful.

Mainz: Wine market in the city park: Enjoy music, wine tasting, the artist market and children’s program at this multi-day event.

Mainz: SCHIFF Open-Air-Kino (Movie Theater):  The Lost City will be played in German, but you may be able to use the Greta app to listen to the movie in English or another language.

 

Sunday

Frankfurt: Courtyard Festival: Enjoy several courtyard set-ups in the town center.

Frankfurt: Irish Festival: Enjoy music, dancing, storytelling, Irish football, bouncy castles, food and drinks all day long.

Mainz: English tour, Dom museum, “Our Besties,” : Enjoy this English-language tour as guide discuss their favorite exhibits of the museum.

Mainz: Wine market in the city park: Enjoy music, wine tasting, the artist market and children’s program at this multi-day event.

Mainz: SCHIFF Open-Air-Kino (Movie Theater):  Top Gun: Maverick will be played in German, but you may be able to use the Greta app to listen to the movie in English or another language.

 

 

Stuttgart

Friday

Stuttgart Expats: Stuttgart Weindorf: This English-language get together is hosted by the Stuttgart expats for a night of food and wine.

 

Saturday

Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle: Paw Patrol LIVE: Come see Chase, Marshall and all your favorite Paw Patrol characters live on stage.

Hofen: Tractor Museum Opening: Come enjoy this two-day event including grilled food, cakes, and over a dozen restored tractors on display.

Schlossplatz: 4th Trans* Pride Stuttgart: The event begins with a parade and is followed by a series of panel discussions and musical acts.

UNI site in Stuttgart-Vaihingen: Flea Market: Come find the treasure for your home you didn’t know you need at this large flea market. 

Galaxy Bowling & Entertainment Center (MWR): Fall Bowling League Registration Until September 12: If you love bowling and want to spend some time honing your skills, sign up for the fall league one day this weekend. Several day or night leagues are available for all ages, such as the Tuesday Night Teachers League, Thursday Ladies Morning League or Saturday Youth League.

 

Sunday

Mercedes-Benz Museum: Classics and Coffee: Drink coffee and show your classic vehicle or just come look at all the amazing classic vehicles.

Hofen: Tractor Museum Opening: Come enjoy this two-day event including grilled food, cakes, and over a dozen restored tractors on display.

 

 

Bavaria

Friday

Munich: Finest Spirits Festival: Come enjoy a selection of hundreds of whiskeys, rums, brandy and vodka until Sunday. Be sure to check out public transportation options or overnight stays for a safe evening and fun weekend in Munich.

 

Saturday

Munich: Super Bloom Festival: Experience art and music at this festival including Calvin Harris and Macklemore until Sunday.

Munich: BavariaCON 2022: The roleplaying convention of Bavaria has finally returned where you can cosplay and play tabletop games. 

Nürnberg: Bluegrass Jam: Listen to great music while you eat delicious food.

 

Sunday

Nürnberg: Dance with Friends - Salsa y Bachata Social Dance: A night of dancing and music awaits you at this lively event.

Nürnberg: Art Night (Learn to Paint): Choose from two different pictures and follow along as an instructor shows you how to paint.

Lectures and workshops on the economy will most likely occur in German but may offer alternatives for English-speakers.
