See Cologne in a new light at Koelner Lichter

Cologne is a fantastic city to explore, almost any time of day — any time of year. With a rich and storied past, bustling café culture along the banks of the Rhine, and those twin spires of the cathedral piercing the sky, it’s easy to see the allure. However, once a year in July, Cologne comes alive at night with a bang at Kölner Lichter (Cologne Lights).

On Saturday, July 15, dozens of ships and boats decked in colorful lanterns and lights will sail lazily down the Rhine after sunset. Landlubbers can stake out their spot along the water beginning in the early afternoon. Live music and entertainment will start around 8 p.m., with the flotilla setting sail at approximately 10 p.m. As the boats arrive near the Cologne Altstadt, witness a breathtaking fireworks display synchronized to music. For added fun, visitors can download the lyrics to the songs and sing along.

Want to be more than just a spectator on the riverbank? You can still book a last-minute ticket on one of the party barges. For more information, including revised public transportation timetables and best viewing spots, visit www.koelner-lichter.de.
