Christkindlmarkt in Augsburg

Active for more than 500 years, the Christkindlmarkt in the city founded by Roman Emperor Augustus is one of Germany's oldest and most popular markets. A highlight is the daily performance of the Augsburg Angels at the 16th-century city hall's giant Advent calendar. The angels arrive at 6 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the market, as well as Dec. 23.

Christmas market dates: Nov. 25-Dec. 24, 2019

Market Hours:  Sunday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. Christmas Eve 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Location: Rathausplatz

Helpful hints: Mail letters to loved ones that are postmarked by the Christkind at the Heavenly Post Office, located by the main Christmas tree. For the best views of the market and the Bavarian Alps, climb 230 to the top of the Perlachturm (Pearl Tower) next to the market. It is open Thursdays to Sundays during the Christmas market from 2 to 6 p.m.

Beyond the market: Have a look at the gilded interior of city hall. If you're traveling with little ones, head to the train museum or zoo
