Catch a glimpse of Will and Kate in Heidelberg this week
Heidelberg is known for its romantic, hilltop castle, but on Thursday, July 20, Schloss Heidelberg won’t be the main royal attraction — Duke William and Duchess Catherine of Cambridge are coming to town! The couple’s brief visit to Heidelberg is part of a three-day trip to Germany, which includes stops in Berlin and Hamburg. Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to the city to catch a glimpse of the famous couple whose modern, fairy-tale romance has captured the hearts of devotees in countries all over the world.
The day starts with a visit to the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), where the Duke and Duchess will learn about the stem cell research being conducted at the facility. Afterward, Lord Mayor Professor Dr. Eckart Würzner will accompany the royal pair to visit the British-German market in the old town square.
In the afternoon, rowers from Cambridge and Heidelberg will participate in a friendly competition in honor of the royal visit. The event is scheduled to take place after 2:30 p.m. at the Old Bridge. Find a spot along the banks of the Neckar River to watch, and be sure to stick around for the public festival that will commence after the regatta.
Sidewalks will be closed to traffic between the Old Bridge and the Theordor-Heuss-Bridge from 12 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For traffic and parking information, visit www.heidelberg.de/hd,Lde/royaler+besuch.html.
