Beautiful blooms abound at the Chelsea Flower Show

After going virtual for the 2020 season, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show is making a surprising debut for 2021, as they’re holding the show in the fall. For more than 100 years, the RHS has held this stunningly colorful event in mid-late May. However, organizers decided to push the date back to late September in hopes the U.K. lockdown restrictions would ease due to the ongoing pandemic. Luckily for them (and for us), the show will go on from Sept. 21-26, 2021.

What is it?

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a must-see for budding botanists, horticulturalists or anyone who appreciates viewing award-winning gardens, flowers and plants. Each year, thousands of beautiful, vibrant blooms are meticulously arranged in the Royal Hospital Chelsea grounds. This year’s theme fittingly celebrates nurses, particularly those who work for the National Health Service (NHS). Because of the season change from spring to fall, unique and one-of-a-kind displays featuring autumn foliage and colors are incorporated into the designs.

Of course, you can simply stop and smell the roses while wandering through the halls, or you can chat with different designers and vendors for ideas of how to start your relaxing outdoor sanctuary. This year, new to the show, are two areas featuring container and balcony gardens, perfect for apartments and stairwells. Be sure to keep an eye out, as you may spot a Royal family member or a celebrity or two. This annual show is akin to fashion week, but for horticulture.

Know before you go

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show kicks off on Tuesday, Sept. 21 and closes Sunday, Sept. 26. The first two days are members-only, with general public admission beginning on Sept. 23. Doors open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Ticket prices start at £66.75 for members and £83.75 for non-members. If the price is a little steep for your budget, considering exploring Chelsea for the day. The event coincides with the Chelsea History Festival, and there will be plenty of specialty flower displays around the London borough throughout the week.
