10 reasons to love Christmas in Germany

Christmastime in Germany is always a spectacular splendor. Though the current pandemic may change the climate of this special time of year—Christmas markets that are mostly canceled, not being to have family visit and not being able to travel to a different country—all make this year’s holiday season hard to get in the holly, jolly mood. However, there are still many reasons to love Christmas in Germany. Below are just a few reasons why.

  1. The scrumptious treats we look forward to every year to include Glühwein, Lebkuchen, Christmas cookies and fest foods.
  2. Of course, though not this year, the beloved Christmas markets. Nuremberg, Cologne, Heidelberg and Bernkastel Kues are my favorites.
  3. This is a time to create new traditions and memories with loved ones.
  4. Our favorite mountainous area, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a winter’s dream covered in snow.
  5. The giant Advent calendar display in Bernkastel-Kues’ market square is always a sight to behold.
  6. American children who misbehave receive coal. German children deal with Krampus and that’s an interesting tale to tell your kiddos.
  7. The cities are festively decorated with shimmering lights and ornately decorated Christmas trees.
  8. For those who love winter sports, we’re just a short drive away from beautiful skiing destinations.
  9. Every bakery has their own version of Christmas cookies and we’re here for it.
  10. Though we may be far away from home, we can still wear our Christmas pajamas and watch holiday movies all day long.
