History of the Neckarsulm Plant
A company called NSU first moved its factory to the current Audi Factory in Neckarsulm in 1880. NSU is derived from Naeh und Strick Union, which translates to sewing and knitting union. This location was used as a knitting machine factory until 1886 when it began bicycle production. By 1892, bicycle production had completely replaced knitting machine production. In 1990 NSU started motorcycle production, the first in Germany. By 1955 it was the biggest motorcycle producer in the world. While NSU had dabbled in car production before, it really began its focus in 1957 with the production of the Prince. By 1968 it no longer produced motorcycles or bicycles and the very next year was taken over by Volkswagen. VW merged NSU with Audi Union and all future production from that site had the Audi Badge.
What started out as a knitting machinery factory has since become home to many impressive Audi innovations. Today the Audi A4 Saloon, Audi A6, Audi A7 and the top-of-the-range Audi A8 model are built at Neckarsulm. quattro GmbH is also based in Neckarsulm and builds the high-performance Audi RS 6, Audi R8 and Audi R8 Spyder.
Neckarsulm has also become known for its technology developments in lightweight body construction, interior advancement and efficient engine development. For more information about the history of NSU, check out the NSU History Museum and the impressive collection of the German Two Wheeler Museum, both located in Neckarsulm.
The Audi Forum Neckarsulm opened in 2005 and has seen over 1 million visitors. It aims to offer its visitors a once in lifetime automotive experience. The Forum showcases car exhibitions, the exclusive studio of the Quattro GmbH, the Audi shop and temporary exhibitions.
