Spend the holidays in a mountain-top igloo
Looking for a non-traditional holiday vacation? Opening for the winter season on Dec. 31, 2016, the Igloo Village Zugspitze is perched 2,560 meters (8,500 feet) above sea level with a view of four countries. Located in Garmisch-Parten-kirchen, the Igloo Village offers a romantic excursion with accommodation, food and activities. You can sleep in an igloo, eat fondue, snow shoe or relax in the Jacuzzi.
The adventure begins upon arrival where you’re greeted by an igloo guide. After a welcome drink and cheese fondue, there’s time to snow shoe or hang out at the igloo bar. The evening heats up in the sauna or Jacuzzi. Romantics can bask in the candlelit rooms and marvel at the snow sculptures. When you’re ready to retreat, crawl into a sleeping bag made to withstand temperatures to minus 40 degree Celsius. There are also sleeping bags made for two. In the morning, tea is served bedside at your sleeping bag before your guide leads you to a mountain restaurant for breakfast.
The first Igloo Village was built in 1996/97 in Scuol, Switzerland and today there are five locations: Davos-Klosters, Engelberg-Titlis and Gstaad, Switzerland (opening Dec. 25); Zermatt, Switzerland (opening Dec. 9); and Zugspitze in Germany. Accommodations vary according to location. Standard igloos sleep up to six people and start at 119 euros per person. Romantic igloos (priced at 179 euros per person) are outfitted for couples, and the deluxe option includes an in-suite toilet. In Gstaad, Davos-Klosters and Zermatt the romantic igloo suites include private whirlpools.
