An easy day trip from Barcelona, the Benedictine Monk retreat at Montserrat is magnificent. The natural beauty cannot be put into human words or print.
The retreat is nestled high up in the mountains, accessible by train or cable car. The views from the top of the mountain are awe-inspiring, the air is crisp and clean. The monastery is spectacular, home to delicate sculptures and the fabled Black Madonna.
There are also several trails and a cable car to take you further up the mountain, where numerous trails can be taken to secret grottos. There is not a lens in this world that will capture the feeling you have at this place.
The trip from Barcelona is 75 minutes. Two-way tickets cost 30 euros, which includes round-trip transport from Barcelona and your choice of either a cable car or train up the mountain. Entrance to the monastery is also included. If you arrive early in the morning, you can hear a recital by the world famous Montserrat Choir.
I highly suggest the cable car unless you are afraid of heights because the view is amazing, plus the train runs through the mountain, offering zero interesting views.
Whenever and however you arrive, ensure your camera battery is fully charged and you have plenty of storage on your memory card.
