Countdown to Christmas: Many magical Munich markets
The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz is Munich’s main market, with countless food stalls, local crafts and daily Santa sightings. Live music resounds from the Neues Rathaus each evening, and every Sunday, there’s a scavenger hunt at the market called “20 x Budenzauber.” Visit City Hall to start your game. Christmas market dates: Nov. 25-Dec. 24.
Relive the merriment of the Middle Ages at the Medieval Christmas Fair on Wittelsbacher Platz. Drink flaming cocktails from goblets served by bartenders in period costumes and peruse medieval-themed gifts. Christmas market dates: Nov. 24-Dec. 23.
At the trendy Tollwood Winter Festival, modern tents burst at the seams with gifts from around the globe, multicultural cuisine and organic treats. Christmas market dates: Nov. 23 to Dec. 23 with a New Year’s Eve bash Dec. 31.

Helpful hints: Parking is not possible in the old town, so take a tram, S-bahn or U-bahn, or use the Park + Ride system. Hop on the special Christmas tram to rest your feet, warm up and drink mulled wine as you journey between markets.
Purchase a detailed, handmade manger scene for your home at the largest manger market in Germany, the Kripperlmarkt at Richard-Strauss-Brunnen.
Beyond the market: Tour the gigantic, ostentatious Munich Residenz — opt for the short tour because the long version could take all day. Have a gourmet meal in the quiet restaurant next to the Chinese pagoda in the city's English Garden. Or get a little rowdy with a giant beer and platter of meat at a famous Bavarian Brauhaus.
